Yes, free AI visibility tools are available as page diagnostics, one-time reports, time-limited trials and ongoing plans with usage caps. Some free plans include automated monitoring across multiple models and citation data. The choice depends on what you need to learn: whether a page is accessible, how your product appears in answers, or what changes after you improve it.
Key takeaways
- Check what stays free after signup: a page scan, a report, a trial or recurring monitoring.
- Compare exact prompt limits, included engines, refresh schedules and history retention. A free account does not necessarily include free ongoing tracking.
- Track mentions and citations, then read the answers to understand how your product is presented. A mention alone does not establish a recommendation.
- Compare engines separately. Our State of AI Search for Dev Tools report found different citation patterns across platforms.
- DevTune connects the measurement loop: identify an opportunity, ship an approved change and compare before/after evidence, with crawler, referral and conversion data from connected sources. Its platform trial lasts 14 days with no credit card required.
The four types of free AI visibility access
“Free AI visibility tool” describes several different products. Start by identifying which one you are evaluating.
| Access type | What you get | Engines and prompt coverage | Refresh and history | Main limitation | Useful for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free diagnostic utility | A page readability or technical check | May query no answer engine at all; often works on one URL | Run manually; saved history varies | Cannot establish whether buyers receive a recommendation | Checking whether important page content is accessible |
| Free snapshot report | A baseline report about a site or brand | Provider-selected scope; inspect the actual prompts and engines | A point-in-time result, without a promised monitoring schedule | Cannot establish a trend from one report | Finding questions to investigate |
| Free trial | Temporary access to a commercial platform | Trial-specific limits; may differ from the plan you later buy | Monitoring during the trial; post-trial access varies | Access expires; a card may be required | Testing the workflow with your own prompts |
| Ongoing free tier | Recurring monitoring within a fixed allowance | Can cover multiple models; caps vary by provider | May refresh weekly and retain limited history | Small samples and short retention can restrict comparisons | Keeping a small prompt set under observation |
| Paid platform | Monitoring at a contracted level of coverage | Prompts, engines and locations depend on the plan | Check cadence, retention and export terms separately | Subscription cost, add-ons and usage charges | Maintaining repeatable monitoring across a larger buyer question set |
These are access models, not quality rankings. A useful free plan can be a better fit than a paid plan that measures the wrong questions.
1. Standalone diagnostics and browser extensions
A diagnostic checks whether a page exposes useful content to machines. That can help you investigate documentation whose code examples, pricing details or API reference text only appear after JavaScript runs.
Adobe's free AI Content Visibility Checker compares an agent view with the rendered page and reports machine readability. Adobe describes it as a standalone browser extension that needs no Adobe license. This is the free utility to distinguish from Adobe's broader commercial offering.
A readability score is not an observed citation rate. Use it to find content-access problems, then check real answers to see whether an engine cites the page.
2. One-time snapshot reports
DevTune offers a free AI visibility check without signup. Use it to assess your site and identify issues to investigate before setting up recurring measurement.
Other snapshot offers include BrandViz's free AI audit and fix plan, advertised without a credit card. For any snapshot, inspect the assessment method, run date and supporting evidence before interpreting its score.
Be precise about what a report measures. A site-readiness assessment and a batch of live buyer-question answers are different baselines, even if both use the word “visibility.”
3. Time-limited platform trials
Trials let you test whether a platform handles your actual evaluation work. Bring your own prompt set and inspect the recorded answers, source URLs and export options.
DevTune offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card required. Use it to establish a baseline, inspect answers and source URLs, and evaluate how Actions and Outcomes connect content work to measurement. DevTune pricing.
For comparison, Otterly documents a seven-day trial with 50 search prompts and no credit card requirement. Continued monitoring requires a paid plan. Trial duration and prompt count describe the evaluation allowance; also check what work you can complete with that evidence.
A short trial can establish whether a tool fits your workflow. It cannot, by itself, establish that changing your content caused a durable improvement in AI recommendations.
4. Ongoing free tiers with usage limits
An ongoing free tier has no scheduled trial expiry, but it still has limits. LLM Metrix, for example, advertises citation intelligence and CSV export on a free plan covering one domain, three tracked prompts, four fixed AI models, weekly refresh and seven days of retained history. That supports a small recurring check; a longer before/after comparison would require retaining exports or using a plan with more history.
That example matters because free does not automatically mean one engine or mention counts only. Inspect the actual allowance. Also distinguish model coverage from access to a particular consumer search experience.
A free account does not necessarily include ongoing free monitoring. LLMrefs advertises free signup alongside a seven-day paid-product trial. Confirm the recurring allowance separately from the signup offer.
Specific free options to compare
The following summarizes advertised offers reviewed on 7 September 2026. Competitor entries are based on provider documentation, not hands-on testing. DevTune's trial terms reflect its current 14-day, no-card offer. Compare each offer against the task you need to complete.
| Tool or offer | Free access | Documented allowance or deliverable | Engines or models in the free offer | Cadence | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DevTune | Free site check; separate 14-day platform trial | Initial assessment without signup; no credit card required for the trial | Site assessment plus plan-based AI Search tracking in the trial | Site check on demand; daily platform probes | Evaluate source-level evidence, Actions, Outcomes and connected traffic data; a full before/after window needs coverage on both sides |
| Adobe AI Content Visibility Checker | Standalone diagnostic | Page readability and agent-versus-human content comparison | Page inspection, not a multi-engine answer sample | On demand | Whether missing technical content is exposed after your fix |
| BrandViz free audit | Snapshot report | AI audit and fix plan; no card | Inspect the report; no fixed free engine list established here | Initial report | Exact prompts, source evidence and what recurring access costs |
| Otterly | Seven-day trial | 50 search prompts; no card | Confirm trial engine entitlements separately | During trial | Engine add-ons and the paid plan needed to continue |
| LLM Metrix | Ongoing free plan | One domain, three tracked prompts, seven-day history | Four fixed AI models | Weekly | Exact models, search grounding and whether retention suits your comparison window |
What a technical checker can and cannot measure
Page inspection versus live answer collection
A crawler can inspect response status, robots directives, page text and structured data. An llms.txt validator can check a file's contents or format. Neither establishes that an answer engine retrieved your documentation or recommended your product.
For that, inspect a recorded answer to a buyer question. Ask a tracking vendor how it collected that answer: a search-enabled API, a consumer web interface or another route. Those methods need not produce equivalent results. Preserve the collection method when comparing tools or time periods.
For a developer-tool company, the useful question might be “Which authentication service supports B2B organizations and SAML in Next.js?” A technically readable homepage does not tell you which vendor an engine selects for those constraints.
Single prompts versus follow-up questions
A first answer may offer a broad shortlist. A follow-up such as “Which supports self-hosting?” changes the task and may change the recommendation.
Keep standard single-turn monitoring and conversational tests separate. For a conversation test, save the full sequence and compare the same sequence across runs. A dashboard with hundreds of independent prompts does not necessarily test multi-turn buying journeys.
What our developer-tool research shows about platform differences
DevTune's State of AI Search for Dev Tools report covers 54,747 answer observations and 126,814 citation records across 43 developer-tool categories. The benchmark uses a fixed 90-day window from 2 April to 30 June 2026, with evaluation questions repeated weekly.
ChatGPT Search averaged 3.42 citations per test, compared with 1.60 for Google AI Mode. These describe source-link volume, not recommendation rates or the chance of winning a citation. They give buyers a concrete reason to examine engine-level results before relying on a combined visibility score.
The report covers ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Gemini Search, Google AI Mode and xAI Search. That is the historical research sample, not the current DevTune plan lineup. Its fixed evaluation questions are not a log of real buyer searches.
For your own monitoring, keep prompts and collection settings stable, collect repeated observations and retain failed runs as missing coverage. Compare the same engine with itself over time as well as comparing engines with one another.
Mentions, citations and what the answer actually says
A mention names your brand. A citation links to a source. Neither tells you, on its own, whether an answer recommends your product for the buyer's requirements.
For example, an answer could mention your authentication service but recommend a competitor because the buyer needs self-hosting. It could also cite your documentation to explain a limitation. Read the answer and its sources alongside the counts to understand that distinction.
DevTune tracks brand mentions and citations and lets you inspect the recorded responses. Use that evidence to check whether your product is described accurately, which competitors appear and which pages support the answer. Treat recommendation language as something to review in context, rather than inferring it from a mention count. Search tracking setup.
When comparing platforms, ask how each metric is calculated, which completed answers it includes and how failed runs affect coverage. A visibility percentage without a defined prompt set and comparison window is difficult to interpret.
Why developer tools need source URLs
In our State of AI Search for Dev Tools report, documentation accounted for 17.3% of citation records overall and 39.6% in API Development & Management.
A domain-level total can hide the page you need to investigate. For an API or SDK, distinguish citations to installation docs, API references, GitHub READMEs, issue discussions and third-party comparisons.
If an answer says your SDK lacks a feature, open its cited sources. An outdated comparison page calls for different work from missing documentation. A citation identifies a source shown with the answer; it does not expose every input behind the model's response.
Define which URLs count as yours, including your documentation host and official repositories. DevTune's setup documentation supports tracked URLs and brand terms separately, so linked citations and unlinked mentions can be interpreted independently. Search tracking setup.
A practical decision framework
Stay free while a small, repeatable check answers your question
Start with a handful of buyer questions that matter to your product. Include a category question, a comparison and a technical requirement that changes the shortlist. Avoid building the entire sample around your brand name.
Use a free diagnostic for page-access problems and a snapshot or free tracking plan for an initial answer review. If you can maintain the sample and retain enough history, there is no reason to upgrade just because you have launched a commercial plan.
For manual work, keep a record like this:
run_time_utc, prompt_id, exact_prompt, engine, collection_method,
country, language, conversation_context, completion_status,
answer_text, brand_mentioned, cited_urls, answer_review_notes
Save complete answers alongside the spreadsheet if they are too long for convenient review. Use the same definitions each time and keep the original evidence.
Pay when a specific coverage limit blocks the work
Upgrade when you need more buyer questions than the free plan permits, reliable scheduled collection, an engine your current plan excludes, longer comparison windows or integrations that connect shipped changes with crawler activity, referrals and conversions.
For example, a weekly plan with seven days of retained history will not preserve a month of observations in its dashboard. Exports may make it workable, but someone must maintain them. Include that person's time in the comparison.
During a trial, check that you can retrieve the answer behind a metric, identify competitor sources and repeat the same prompt set. Then check whether the paid plan preserves those capabilities.
Calculate total cost using a fixed workload
Choose a workload before comparing prices. For example:
20 prompts × 5 engines × 2 locations × 30 daily runs
= 6,000 planned answer collections in a 30-day month
This is a workload calculation, not a billing formula. Some vendors charge for stored prompts, some bundle engines and others meter executions or credits. Ask how your exact workload maps to their plan.
Check the following before buying:
- Which named engines are included, and which cost extra? Otterly's pricing lists Google AI Mode, Gemini and Claude as add-ons.
- Does adding a country consume another prompt slot? Otterly documents one slot per country for each prompt.
- Is the quoted amount a monthly payment or an annual subscription expressed per month?
- How often does each engine refresh? Daily collection gives seven scheduled observations per week rather than one, but not necessarily seven times the information.
- How long do answers remain accessible, and can you export them before cancelling?
- Are retries, additional projects, seats, API access and webhooks included?
DevTune's measurement loop: measure, fix, prove
DevTune connects visibility tracking to the work of improving it. You can investigate the answers and sources behind a gap, prioritize a fix, prepare a draft or brief, ship an approved change and compare what happened afterwards. The useful output is a record of what changed, when it changed and which signals moved.
Establish a baseline across answers and site activity
Start collecting evidence before editing the page. Each source answers a different question:
| Evidence | Source in DevTune | Question it helps answer |
|---|---|---|
| Brand mentions and citations | Scheduled AI Search probes | What do AI answers say about the product, and which URLs do they cite? |
| Crawler activity and answer fetches | Cloudflare log integration or edge middleware | Are AI systems retrieving the page, and are those requests crawls or answer fetches? |
| AI referral sessions and conversions | Google Analytics 4, with selected key events | Which identifiable AI referrals arrive, and which configured conversion events follow? |
| Organic search clicks and impressions | Google Search Console | How is Google search performance changing for the same pages? |
Choose a crawler sensor suited to your hosting, then connect GA4 and Search Console. For conversions, select the GA4 key events that matter to your business, such as a signup or demo request that you already record. Search Console provides search performance evidence; conversion data comes from GA4. Measurement sources and setup.
These signals give you several ways to examine a change. More answer fetches show retrieval activity; referral sessions and conversions show the attributable visitor activity. They are separate observations, not a traced journey from an individual AI answer to a sale. Reading AI Demand.
Ship a change and compare consistent windows
Outcomes links completed actions with detected page changes and their before/after evidence. Its ledger compares the 14 days after a detected change with the 14 days before it, including citation, presence and available answer-fetch changes. The change record and coverage indicators make the comparison inspectable. Outcomes ledger and timeline.
Use that workflow with the discipline of an experiment:
- Write a specific hypothesis before editing. For example, clearer SAML setup documentation should address a recurring omission in answers about your authentication service.
- Record the affected URL and the change you intend to make. Keep the tracked prompts, engines and collection settings stable during the comparison.
- Ship the approved edit and use the detected change as the measurement reference point. Record other releases or campaigns that could affect the result.
- Let the comparison window complete. Review page-level citations and retrieval alongside the relevant AI Demand and search performance data, checking the dates and coverage for each source.
- Decide what to do next from the observed result: retain the change, investigate an unexpected result or test a different explanation.
This is a repeatable method for learning from content changes. It also gives the team a shared record to review, instead of a screenshot taken on a good day.
Interpret the result with its evidence
DevTune's coverage indicators distinguish a complete observation window from partial or unavailable measurements. Missing coverage is not a zero. A rise after an edit is evidence of an association; establishing that the edit caused it requires stronger experimental controls. Outcome status and confidence.
GA4 referrals and conversions add business context, but they capture only attributable activity. Use them alongside retrieval and citation evidence rather than treating them as a complete account of AI-influenced buying. In AI Demand, delta columns compare the selected reporting window with the preceding one; check those dates when reviewing them alongside an Outcomes comparison. AI Demand reporting.
Evaluate the loop during the free trial
DevTune offers a free site check for an initial assessment and a 14-day free trial with no credit card required for its paid platform. Use the trial to connect your sources, establish a baseline and assess the workflow. A complete 14-day before/after comparison needs coverage on both sides of the change and may extend beyond the trial. Free check, pricing and trial terms.
For search tracking, Starter and Plus support ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Pro, Agency and Enterprise also support Google AI Mode and Microsoft Bing Copilot. Platform availability.
The Webhooks page requires Plus or above through the API Access entitlement, along with the appropriate account permission. Check that requirement if you plan to feed results into your own systems. Webhook documentation.
Our AI search visibility guide explains how to use the answers and cited sources to choose your first fix.
Frequently asked questions
Can I track visibility manually with free ChatGPT or Perplexity accounts?
Yes, within the access and usage limits of those services. Record the exact question, answer, sources, date and settings. A fresh conversation reduces carry-over from earlier messages, but incognito browsing does not guarantee a standardized location, model version or search experience. Treat the results as observations from your test conditions.
How much do entry-level paid tools cost?
Examples checked for this guide include Otterly Lite at $29 per month and LLMrefs' advertised All-in-One offer at $79 per month. These are examples, not a market-wide minimum or a like-for-like comparison. Prompt allowances, engine add-ons and billing commitments differ.
For DevTune, use the current pricing page to compare plans and trial terms.
Do free tools show which pages AI cites?
Yes. Some ongoing free plans include citation data, as the LLM Metrix example above shows. The useful test is whether you can inspect the URLs and answers, retain a baseline and compare later observations. DevTune lets you inspect recorded responses and tracked-source citations as part of its broader measurement workflow. Search tracking setup.
Does paying make the measurement reliable?
Payment alone tells you little about measurement quality. Inspect the prompt set, collection method, completed-run coverage and metric definitions. A paid dashboard still needs evidence you can review.
Start with DevTune's free site check to identify what needs attention. To evaluate the full measure, fix, prove workflow, start a 14-day trial with no credit card required. Connect your sources before making changes so you have a baseline to compare against.
