Reddit's Share of ChatGPT Citations Fell 98.6% in August 2026

Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations fell from 10.89% to 0.15% in DevTune's stable prompt cohort.

Across 324 prompts tracked every day in both comparison windows, Reddit held an average 10.89% share from July 18 through August 7, 2026. From August 14 through August 17, its share averaged 0.15%: a 98.6% relative decline.

The decline began on August 8, accelerated on August 14 and persisted through August 23. On the final day we measured, the cohort produced no Reddit citations at all.

These numbers come from citation occurrences captured by DevTune's production prompt tracking. The analysis contains no customer, project, account, prompt text, brand, topic or individual URL.

The change was large, and it stuck

Reddit averaged 10.89% of ChatGPT citations during the 21-day baseline. Its share averaged 4.36% from August 8 to 13. The first daily change was from 12.25% on August 7 to 4.75% on August 8.

The larger break came on August 14. Share fell to 0.28%, then remained below 0.2% for the next three days. From August 14 to 17, Reddit received 11 of the cohort's 7,328 citations.

Reddit averaged 0.22% from August 18 to 23, with 20 Reddit citations among 9,018 total citations.

We can date both breaks. We cannot see what changed inside ChatGPT or why Reddit lost share.

The first break came with different response metadata

The raw response metadata gives us another clue. On August 7, 401 of 499 successful responses carried the provider model label gpt-5-5. Another 35 carried gpt-5-6, and 63 carried the generic chatgpt label. On August 8, 425 of 499 responses carried gpt-5-6. Only one still carried gpt-5-5; 73 carried chatgpt.

The two labelled groups already behaved differently before the switch. On August 7, gpt-5-6 responses averaged 3.77 recorded web queries. The gpt-5-5 responses averaged 1.01. Once gpt-5-6 dominated the captured mix on August 8, the overall median rose from one recorded query per response to three.

All successful ChatGPT Search executions captured by DevTune from August 4 to 17. Model labels, web queries and source cards come from the collection provider's response metadata.

Query volume barely moved after the first break. It averaged 3.22 per response from August 8 to 13 and 3.21 from August 14 to 17, with a median of three in both periods. Reddit accounted for 10.51% of returned source cards from August 4 to 7, 3.18% from August 8 to 13 and 0.24% from August 14 to 17.

The data shows two different events. The first came with a sharp change in the provider model labels and the number of recorded queries. The second came with no drop in query volume. Reddit simply stopped appearing in most of the returned source cards.

We should not turn those labels into an OpenAI release date. They may reflect a change in ChatGPT routing, a change in the provider's classification, or both. We can report the shift in the responses we captured. We cannot claim that OpenAI shipped a particular model or fan-out update on August 8.

Reddit also disappeared from the raw responses

ChatGPT kept returning plenty of responses and citations. From August 8 to 13, the dataset contained an average 503 successful responses per day. From August 14 to 17, it contained 499. The share with at least one citation rose from 97.85% to 98.65%.

The answers also carried more citations, not fewer. Average citation depth rose from 5.80 to 6.34 citations per response. Reddit lost ground while ChatGPT's overall use of citations increased.

A four-day comparison shows how widely the change spread:

Reddit's breadth shrank with its citation count: from 295 URLs across 119 subreddits to 9 URLs across 9 subreddits.

The platforms moved in different directions

Adding Perplexity and Bing Copilot Search makes the split clearer. Reddit did not fall across every AI search platform.

To keep prompt composition from driving the result, each comparison below uses only prompts present throughout both windows for that platform.

Google AI Mode's Reddit share fell from 9.28% to 5.96%, a 35.8% relative decline. Its clearest earlier step came at the end of July. Share for July 29 to August 4 was 15.6% lower than for July 22 to 28.

Gemini Search moved from 2.22% to 2.03%, an 8.9% relative decline. That is movement, but not a cliff.

Perplexity moved the other way. Reddit's share rose from 0.89% to 1.40%, a 58.1% relative increase. The fixed cohort produced 164 Reddit citations in the first window and 272 in the second.

Bing Copilot Search returned no Reddit citations in either window. That was zero among 19,397 citations in the first window and 17,270 in the second.

The platforms should not be blended into one "AI visibility" number. ChatGPT changed abruptly, Perplexity increased and Bing was already at zero. A combined average would erase the result.

What this means for teams investing in Reddit

This does not make Reddit irrelevant.

A ChatGPT citation is only one reason Reddit matters. Its discussions influence how buyers check recommendations, what writers publish and the language people use for products and categories. Losing live citations does not erase any of that.

Do not diagnose a brand problem from a platform event

If your Reddit citation count fell in mid-August, your content probably did not all become worse on the same day. A broader source shift is the first explanation to test.

Compare your result with the wider domain trend before changing strategy. Otherwise you risk "fixing" content that is behaving exactly like the rest of the source.

Track source mix by platform

ChatGPT Search, Google AI Mode, Gemini Search, Perplexity and Bing Copilot Search showed different trends. Source-level monitoring needs to preserve those differences.

A weekly blended number cannot tell you whether Reddit lost ground everywhere, on one platform, or for one topic. Keep the platform, prompt cohort and time window attached to every claim.

Treat source access as volatile

AI search source selection is controlled by the platform. A domain can hold a large share for weeks and lose most of it in a day.

Single-snapshot audits are weak evidence. Measure continuously, use stable prompt sets, and keep source diversification in view. If one community or publisher accounts for most of your citation footprint, that concentration is a risk even while the graph is moving up.

Methodology

This analysis uses aggregate DevTune production data through August 23, 2026. August 24 was excluded because the day was incomplete when the analysis ran. Daily windows use US Eastern calendar dates.

For the main ChatGPT comparison, we selected 324 prompts with an execution on every date in the July 18 to August 7 baseline and August 14 to 17 comparison window. The same cohort remained present through August 23.

For each prompt and day, DevTune counted normalized ChatGPT Search citation occurrences. Reddit share is:

The reported window values are averages of the daily shares, matching the day-by-day question the analysis is answering. The stable ChatGPT cohort produced 34,103 total citations in the baseline window and 7,328 from August 14 to 17.

The other platform comparisons use the same fixed-cohort method. Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Bing Copilot Search each include 290 stable prompts. Gemini Search includes 118. Prompt sets differ by platform, so the comparison shows movement within each platform rather than one shared corpus.

The response-metadata analysis uses all successful ChatGPT Search executions captured from August 4 to 17, rather than the fixed 324-prompt citation cohort. Query averages and medians use executions containing a recorded web_search_query array. Source-card share is reddit.com entries divided by all entries in the provider's search_sources array. The strings gpt-5-5, gpt-5-6 and chatgpt are reproduced exactly from the provider model metadata. DevTune did not independently verify them as OpenAI model versions.

All published charts and tables contain aggregate counts only. They disclose no prompt text, customer identity, project, account, tracked brand, topic or cited URL.

This cohort represents prompts tracked by DevTune. It does not represent every query submitted to ChatGPT.

We know where the break happened, not why

DevTune's data shows that Reddit's place in ChatGPT Search declined in two stages, then remained near zero through August 23.

We cannot see inside ChatGPT's ranking system. Naming the cause would be guesswork.

The result itself is clear. Reddit's citation share fell 98.6% in a stable prompt cohort. The decline was already present in the raw response payloads, and the lower level lasted at least ten days.

AI platforms can change a source's visibility overnight. Continuous measurement catches the change before a team spends a month fixing content that was never the problem.
